Surathkal is the town in the coastal line of Dakshina Kannada District in Karnataka state, located 20 km from Mangalore City and its just 24 meters above the sea level (Arabian Sea). National Highway 17 passing through this town. There are some beaches which becoming popular day by day. The Name of Surathkal derived from Shira kal or Shirada Kallu (literally means ‘Head Stone’ in Tulu and Kannada languages). Surathkal was once maintained under Grama Panchayat, town Panchayat, municipality, presently under Mangalore City Corporation.
National Institute of Technology is situated in this town, and this is one of the India’s best technical institutes in the world. Hindu Vidyadayanee Sangha runs some Education institutes of Schools and Colleges.
Major Industries also situated in and around of Surathkal, some of the main industries are MRPL (Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited), BASF (Baden Aniline and Soda Factory) and MCF (Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers Limited). 6 km away from the town the place called Baikampady Industrial Estate is home to many medium and small scale Industries.
Surathkal has Historival background, has been ruled by many dynasties, such as Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas, Western Chalukyas, Western Gangas and Vijayanagaras. Wodeyars also ruled this place after wodeyars empire, Tipu Sultan took under control of surathkal till he died by British.
